RED TELEPHONE BOXES

Not many other nations in the world have as many symbols as can be directly associated with them as the United Kingdom. Where else would foreigners take photographs of telephone boxes?

Nowadays, telephone boxes are unusual, but several years ago they were very common because people did not have mobile phones. In some parts of the United Kingdom these telephone boxes are peculiar because they are red. They were designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1924. Today red telephone boxes are very popular among tourists and everybody wants a photograph with them. They are a symbol of the United Kingdom.

THE UNION FLAG

The Union Flag is the national flag of the United Kingdom and is commonly known as the Union Jack. It is a symbol of the union of different kingdoms: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. It combines the different flags of England, Scotland and Ireland, Saint George's cross, Saint Andrew's cross and Saint Patrick's cross. Wales was not included because at that time Wales was a Principality and not a Kingdom.
